Music is taken into account as a revolutionary force and may mean many things to many folks. For the Tamil musician Arivu, aside from being a tool of power to express his emotions, thoughts, opinions, and everything in between. Popularly known as ARIVU, whose real name is Arivarasu Kalainesan, is a lyricist and playback singer who works in Tamil language films. He is legendary for the song "Vaathi Raid" from the film “Master” alongside Anirudh and for his single song "Enjoy Enjaami".
He grew up in Arakkonam, a town that may be regarded a massively controversial place in today’s India, as it was conjointly a Muslim neighborhood, with a beef slaughterhouse around. However, he recollects his life there as a cheerful celebration. His parents – Kalainesan and Thenmozhi, were a professor in a government college and a government school teacher respectively and provided their children an intellectual atmosphere.
Both of them were also involved with Arivoli Iyakkam, a Left literacy movement that sang a lot of educational songs in order to raise awareness through art. As a child, Arivu was exposed to many folk songs because he grew up without a TV or a radio at home., As a result, he never got to hear the songs from any movies, and it was the Arivoli movement songs that shaped Arivu’s imagination and politics.
Arivu never went to a music school, he was more of a homegrown singer. Soon enough, he wrote poems about caste and poverty in his high school days and became more politically conscious during his college. Once he went to college, he got introduced to hip-hop and rap, after which he merged the two forms, creating magic with his fingertips. No matter how far he went through his music, he still believes that his starting point was the folk art forms of his village.
