M Manikandan was born in a small town named Usilampatti in Madurai District, Tamil Nadu in India. He is a screenwriter, cinematographer and film director. His career began in Tamil Film Industry as an assistant cinematographer. He was born in a police family. Due to his father’s transfer, he (did his schooling in different towns). He graduated with a diploma degree in automobile engineering. He was fond of photography, and he worked as a wedding photographer. He was a different personality, and (he also did odd jobs such as) created identity cards for college and school children. Later he confessed that he did these jobs to earn money to study a course at Mindscreen Film Institute in digital photography. The film institute was run by Rajiv Menon, popular director, and cinematographer.

Manikandan started working as an assistant cinematographer in the mid - 2000s in Tamil film industry. At the same time, he co-wrote scripts for several short films. In 2010 he directed his debut short film Wind. It was a big breakthrough in his career. The film received critical acclaims, and it was premiered at many film festivals. The short film attracted Vetrimaran, Tamil Film Director. In 2015, Manikandan wrote, directed and cinematographer the film Kaaka Muttai. It was produced by Dhanush and Vetrimaran. (Vignesh and Ramesh, in the lead roles alongside Iyshwarya Rajesh ). It was a comedy drama film in Tamil. The film was premiered at 39th Toronto International Film Festival. It was the first film by a Tamil debut director to be screened at Toronto. The film was a box office hit, and it bagged lots of awards including the National Award.

In the same year, Manikandan wrote the film titled Kirumi. It was directed by Anucharan. It was a Tamil thriller film. The film was released on 24th September 2015, and it received positive reviews. In 2016, he wrote, Cinematographed and directed the film Kuttrame Thandanai. It was a Tamil crime psychological thriller film. Vidharth, Aishwarya Rajesh and Pooja Devariya played the lead roles. The film received good reviews. In the same year, Manikandan wrote and directed the film Aandavan Kattalai. Vijay Sethupathi and Ritika Singh, Nassar and Pooja Devariya played the lead role in this film. It was a Tamil Satirical film. The film received many positive reviews. The film was released on September 23, 2016. It was a box office hit. Manikandan wrote, Directed and Cinematographed the film Kadaisi Vivasaayi which is scheduled to be released in 2017.

He is an India-based film director who works predominantly in the Tamil film industry. He is the son of the legendary director G.N. Rangarajan who has made films with superstar Kamal Haasan. Rangarajan in Tamil Nadu, he was exposed to film making and direction from his childhood. His father has made films like ‘Maharasan’ and ‘Meendum Kokila’ after collaborating with Kamal Haasan. He was planning to cast R. Madhavan for his upcoming movie, but somehow the project didn’t go to floors, and he had to drop this idea. His second movie was romantic comedy starring Bharath and Santhanam. It was titled ‘Yuvan Yuvathi’ but same as his first movie, it got a mixed review from the audiences as well as critics. He came under the spotlight in 2013 with his third movie called ‘Haridas’ starring Kishore and Sneha. It was drama genre revolving around a child. It attacks at the stereotypes about disability and forces us to introspect ourselves while looking at children with disability. This movie grossed positive reviews from all around. This film was included in the 11th Chennai International Film Festival, and the child artist Prithviraj, who played the role of a disabled child, was awarded a special jury award for his performance. He was nominated for the best director category in the Filmfare Awards for this film. His was recently working on his new project named ‘Wagah’ starring Vikram Prabhu. Initially, it was decided that Alia Bhatt will be cast for opposite Vikram for this movie, but later on they took some other actress due to date’s problem. On asked about his new movie, he laughs and says that it is not about Wagah border. It is the story of a girl and a boy who falls in love and then tragedy follow to happen.

The debut film was ‘Ethir Neechal’ starring Siva Karthikeyan, Priya Anand, and ‘Nandita’. The movie is about the man who tries to prove himself through a marathon as others makes a joke about his name. The movie received decent reviews and was applauded by the audience. As it was Senthilkumar’s first movie, it was believed to be a good start. He was also the writer for the movie and he also started working as a screenwriter after this. His next direction was Kaaki Sattai starring Siva Karthikeyan again in the lead role, ‘Prabhu’, and Sri Divya, and which came out in 2015. He was again the writer for the movie. The story of the movie was based on the cop and corruption in the police force. The film was an action film mixed with some romance. Everyone liked the film so much that it earned the biggest opening collection of more than 13 crores. He is currently working on the film ‘Kodi’ whose shooting started in January (2016) and it will release in the year 2016 itself. Kodi is a Tamil film based on politics starring ‘Dhanush’ and Trisha Krishnan, with Dhanush in a double role. It is written by Senthilkumar himself and is being produced by Dhanush.
