He died due to heart seizure in his home on 9th November 2017. Priyan was born and brought up in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. While he was doing a course in polytechnics, the cinematographer spent his time with his uncle Ganesan during a vacation in Chennai. Having observed his interest in movies, his uncle familiarized him to his acquaintance K. Balaji, an actor and a producer in the Tamil industry. Priyan consequently started operating in K. Balaji's behind the screening crew and worked for the production house of Sujatha International, for five years as an assistant cameraman.

Through his job, he was introduced to cinematographer-director Balu Mahendra and worked with him on films including Moondram Pirai (1982), and Yathra (1984). Priyan made his entrance as an autonomous movie maker with K. S. Adhiyaman's Thotta Chinungi (1995), before frequently uniting with director Cheran in flicks like Porkkaalam (1997). During the turn of theera, he got the opportunity to collaborate on high-end plans including K. S. Ravikumar's starter Thenali (2000), Star (2001) and Majunu (2001). The cinematographer started off as a camera assistant and has come this far in the industry.

He has seen various ranges of lenses from the convention alone to high-speed digital cameras. Previously it was problematic to get to know about any latest product and its handling.
