Matthew Mattam was an acclaimed novelist known primarily for the Malayalam movies Karimbu and May Dinam and the television series Alippazham. Matthew Mattam was born in 1950 in Erumeli, Pampa Valley, in Sabarimala to parents Mathew and Mariyamma. He was married to Valsamma Mathew and had seven siblings. However, the author’s father left this world when he was only a year old. The Malayalee author penned his first novel Kaattarum Kanyakayum when he was studying in the eighth standard. His own life inspired the story. It focused on the hardships his mother went through to raise her eight children.
To earn a living through writing, he chose to drop his pre-degree course, which he earlier pursued at Kanjirapally St. Dominix College. He shot to prominence as a novelist in the early 1980s. The writer has to his credit the record of writing thirteen novels simultaneously. Mattam is credited with writing about three hundred novels, published in Manorama Weekly and Mangalam Weekly. His works published in those magazines include Karimbu, Alippazham, Daivam Urangiyittila, Lakshamveedu, Profasarude Makal, Roti, and Anchu Sundarikal. Mattam’s engaging writing style and relatable stories made him popular among the readers.
His stories usually revolve around farmers, layman, and their social lives, partly derived from his own experiences. His novel Karimbu was adapted into a movie by the same name. The author is survived by his wife and two children Kishore and Emily.
