Gowry Lekshmi

Gowry Lekshmi is an Indian singer and songwriter. She composes her tunes and performs at stage shows. She is an Indie-pop music lover and believes in creating her songs. Her dream is to collaborate with alternative music bands such as Coldplay, Mutemath, and Lianne La Havas. She loves RnB, Country, and contemporary music. She took birth in a quaint village named Cherthala, Alappuzha, in Kerala.

Her work is rare, and nowadays this quality is seldom seen in the industry. Music attracted her since she was young; at the age of three, she took her first training in Carnatic Sangeet. She trained under multiple gurus including the likes of Syamala Venkataramani, Vaikom Vasudevan Namboothiri, S.K. Suma, etc. At 11, she started taking Hindustani music classes from Vijay Sursen and Fayaz Khan.

At a tender age, Gowry had already explored two genres of pure Indian music. In 2012, she composed a song called Sakhiya, it got appreciation from filmmaker Roshan Andrews, and he featured it in the Mohan Lal starrer movie Casanova. At just fifteen years of age Gowry’s work had been a part of a Malayalam film. She became the youngest lyricist and composer to become a part of the South Indian cinema. It made her famous among music lovers, and she got a lot of media attention.

At 17, she trained in Western Classical under the guidance of Augustine Paul. Later, she enrolled in the RLV College of Fine Arts and Music to get a Bachelor in Arts (Music) degree. The duo recorded a melody named Aayiram Kaalamai. The young singer’s USP is her ability to pen down lyrics, compose them, and make it into a song. She got attention at a young age, and therefore she started performing at gigs and events. Her music depicts the essence of nature and her stories. In an interview she stated that she does not fix a genre before writing lyrics of a song, it comes to her mind naturally.

She is based in Chennai, splitting her time between her band and performing new songs, some of which are with her husband and drummer, Ganesh Venkitaramani. Apart from Ganesh, the others in her team are Isaac Dharmakumar, John Praveen, and Godfrey Immanuel.

As her family member are all artists, Gowry Lekshmi's interest in music developed, The Kerala-based singer began learning Carnatic music even before dance school, and her talent was evident when her 13-year-old song Sakhiye was nominated by director Roshan Andrews for the film Casanova, her parents never pressured her to do anything and allowed her to pursue her dream, although independent music was new to them, they realized that it was the next big thing in Indian music.

Her songs include country music, funk, and contemporary pop genres. She has sung in Bengaluru, Coimbatore, and in international acts such as Bali and Kuwait. Her music museum is her life. “All her songs are close to nature. she comes from a village near Allepey, and nature has always been a part of her life. She have never been involved in video games or television, as a child. Her fondest memories are of her school days when she was involved in many competitions.

“It could be several a day she was running from one stage to another, waiting for the prizes - it was fun, adding that she did not remember how many prizes she had won. Participating in competitions helped him overcome fear on stage, but she had a lot of nerves during her first live show in Kochi, in 2014 at the age of 21.
