Akbar was born in Thaikulam of Thrissur district, Kerala. He was passionate about films from his childhood; He bunked many classes in school & college days to watch films in cinema halls. After completing his studies in his village he went to Malayalam film industry to kick-start his career. Akku has immense praise for the direction aspect of the film. Akbar & Jose made a director duo whose debut film was Mazhathullikkilukkam (2002) that has Dileep in the lead role. The film got mostly positive reviews & was a semi-hit. Their follow-up film Sadananadate Samayam, also starring Dileep bombed at the box office and made Jose quit the duo. After that, Akbar started his solo career, trying his hands on Bollywood Industry and made debut with his film about Female Foeticide Gauri: The Unborn. The film got rave reviews but performed poorly at the box office. Akbar shot to fame with his 2008 family drama film Veruthe Oru Varya. The film became the third highest-grossing film in Malayalam film industry. The comic relief along with solid plot earned rave reviews too. Akbar won the Asianet Film Award for Best Director for this movie. Then he remade his Bollywood film with the name Kana Kanmini (2009). Vellaripravinte Changathi (2011) based on infamous Sulekha Murder case is his most critically acclaimed film to date.
