His father, Sarekoppa Bangarappa is also a politician and the 12th Chief Minister of Karnataka. His wife is Vidyullatha and they have two children namely Arjun Bangarappa and Lavayna. Kumar started his career by donning several lead roles in many Kannada films such as Amara Prema (1978), Sharavegada Saradara (1989), Ashwamedha (1990), Nava Tare (1991), Ksheera Sagara (1992), Apporva Jodi (1993), Angaiyalli Apsare (1993), Keralida Sarpa (1994), Nirbanadha (1996), Chaithrada Chiguru(1999), Rakta Kanneeru (2003), Taali Kattuva Shubhavele (2004), Keladi Shivappa Nayaka(2012), and many more. He made his way into politics dramatically when he contests the byelection for a position under Shimoga District’s Sorab constituency, by which his father, Sarekoppa Bangarappa, has represented from 1967 to the year 1994. Kumar was then elected to the lower house Legislative Assembly of Karnataka on his father’s regional political party called Karnataka Congress Party. In 1999, he was re-elected from the same assembly constituency after the Karnataka Congress Party and Congress for 2nd term have merged. Under the Sorab constituency, he won as MLA in the 2004 election. He was then introduced as the Minister of state for Municipal Administration under the government of politician, S.M. Krishna. Before that, he has been the Minister of State for Minor Irrigation and has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party when he resigned at the Indian National Congress party. But this only lasted for 20 days and he returned to the Congress again. Kumar has entered the world of politics without any background or influence even though his father is already a Chief Minister. However, this created a rift when his father wanted his younger brother, Madhu, to contest on Bharatiya Janata Party while he retained his seat on Congress. This is the reason why he only stayed on BJP for only 20 days and returned to the Congress again, as he is not comfortable with them. Their rift continued until he and Madhu lost the elections and become even worst when their father died. Recently, it was reported that he will make a comeback in director Chintan’s directorial debut film, Chakravarthy. Kumar will bag a pivotal role in the film and his entire scenes will be shot in Malaysia. His last film appearance was from the movie, Keladi Shivappa Nayaka.
