Valerie Martin, born in 1948 in Missouri is an American Novelist and short story writer. She was raised and educated in New Orleans, Louisiana. She did an MFA Program for Poets and Writers at the University of Massachusetts. Valerie Martin has always been into writing novels and short stories which the readers have always loved.
Her novel ‘Property’ published in 2003 has won the ‘Orange Prize.’ She has written eleven novels, four collections of short stories, and the Biography of St. Francis of Assisi. She taught at the University of Alabam and Sarah Lawrence College.
She was an excellent teacher and she taught English and poetry which is her genre and she gave her best in teaching the students the things which are useful in life rather than making them learn the books. This is what makes a person a good teacher that is giving the knowledge which helps a person grow in life than making them cram up unnecessary things. All appreciated the novels ' The Confessions of Edward Day' and 'The Consolation of Nature' published in 2009 and 1988 respectively. Readers also loved her novel ‘Set In Motion’ which was released in 1978.
In her latest novel, she writes about great ocean voyages and storms that tear apart both ships and hearts. In her novel, she writes about spiritualism with both clarity and skepticism. Earlier she was more drawn towards romantic, spooky and gothic writing. But as she started writing more she understood various things and got attracted to realism, both as a method of writing and as a worldview.
She was nominated for the World Fantasy Best Novel and Nebula Best Novel Award in 1991. She has one child, Adrienne, born in 1975.
