Freddie Mercury was an English rock singer, songwriter, and lead vocalist and pianist of the band Queen. His real name was Farrokh Bulsara. Freddie was born on 5 September 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar (present-day Tanzania). Just 24 hours after disclosing his AIDS diagnosis, he passed away in Kingston, London, on 24 November 1991. In 1964, after his family emigrated to Middlesex, he joined the blues band Wreckage. He graduated in 1969 from the Ealing Technical College and School of Art, where he studied graphic design.Â
With drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May, he founded the band Queen in 1970. Their debut album titled Queen was released in 1973. Bohemian Rhapsody, the band's most well-known operatic-styled hit, was released in 1975 and spent nine weeks at the top of the UK charts. The band's tremendous popularity continued throughout the 1980s, culminating in 1985 with their legendary stage performance at Live Aid.Â
Mr. Bad Guy (1985) and Barcelona (1988) were his two solo studio albums outside Queen. Mr. Bad Guy, his debut album, debuted in the UK Album Charts' top ten list. A remix of the track Living on My Own peaked at number one on the UK Singles Charts in 1993, posthumously. In 1986, he and Dave Clark recorded the West End musical Time in London, his first significant solo collaboration. In 1987, he recorded with the opera star Montserrat Caballé. Their title song, Barcelona, became the 1992 Olympic theme song and an anthem for Seora Caballé's hometown. He appeared posthumously on Queen's last studio album, Made in Heaven, in November 1995. The CD included his unreleased final recordings from 1991 and revised versions of the other band members' compositions. The Mercury Phoenix Trust is an AIDS charity founded in Freddie Mercury's honor by the members of Queen and his Executor, Jim Beach.
