Paul graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He married Ann mclaughlin in the year 1968.

They had three kids whose names are Cristopher, Anthony, and Genevieve. He divorced Ann after they had three kids in the year 1978. He later married Susan Harris on the 18th of September in the year 1983. He usually produces his films and shows with two partners. They are Charles Anthony Thomas and his wife, Susan Harris.

Charles Anthony Thomas is popularly known as Tony Thomas. Paul produced the TV shows Here Come the Brides, The Partridge Family, The Golden Girls, Soap, Benson, It's A Living, Empty Nest, Blossom and many more with both of his partners. He and Tony together established a company named Witt/Thomas Productions in the year 1975.

They produced all their TV shows and Feature Films under this banner. They also produced the films Dead Poets Society, Three Kings, Insomnia, and Brian’s Song. Paul died on the 27th of April in the year 2018 due to cancer. He was in Los Angeles while he died.
