Kate Burton

Katherine Kate Burton was born on 10th September 1957 in the Geneva city of Switzerland. She is 5 feet 6.5 inches tall. She has four sisters- Liza Todd, Jessica, Amy Christopher, and Maria.

Maria is a film director. Kate is married to Michael Ritchie, who is the director of the Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles. The couple got married in 1985 and are the parents of actors, Charlotte Ritchie, and Morgon Ritchie. Kate was raised by her parents in Geneva.

She pursued her Bachelors from the Brown University and graduated in 1979 with a degree in European and Russian History. Here at Brown University, she became a member of the student theatre group and a board member of the Production Workshop. She took an enrolment in the Yale School of Drama for a Master’s degree in dramatics. She was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Award by the Brown University in 2007.

In 1969, Kate did her first film titled, Anne of the Thousand Days. She played the role of a serving maid and was not noticed in her role. She made her second television appearance in the show, Great Performances in 1983. She played the role of Alice in its episode titled, Alice in Wonderland.

The episode was based on the famous fairy tale novel of the same name. Kate’s second film was Ellis Island in 1984. She was cast with eighteen other actors. The film was an adaptation of a novel which has the same name. In the movie, she played the role of Vanessa Ogden. She is well-known for her performance in an ABC medical drama series, Grey’s Anatomy in 2005.

She appeared in seventeen of its episodes. She played the role of Ellis Grey, who was a general surgeon and mother of Meredith Grey. She was widely loved for her small but powerful character. Other than being an actress, she is also into social service and reads books to blind children weekly in different book stores of Los Angeles.

Burton has been honoured for her work with various awards. She received a Daytime Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Special for the show, Afterschool Special in 1995. She has received 2 Primetime Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Guest Actress (Drama Series) for Grey’s Anatomy (2007) and Scandal (2014).
