She has a sister named Kathleen Hope Payne, and two brothers namely Daniel Lederer and Thomas John Payne. She married actor Skip Ward in 1964 and got divorced in the following year. Later, she met Robert Towne, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter with whom she married in 1977 and got divorced in 1982.
They have daughter named Katharine Towne, who started her career as an actress in 1998 and has appeared in number of films and television series. She reconnected with her high school sweetheart named Steve Luckman in 1999, and they were together until her death. Julie Payne started her career at the early age. She marked her acting debut at the age of eighteen as the sole female in “The Pawn,” her father’s 1957-59 NBC western series, “The Restless Gun.” Subsequently, she appeared in the episodes of an American anthology series “Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond,” created by Merwin Gerard. Her film appearances also consisted of uncredited bits in the 1962’s American neo-noir psychological political thriller film “The Manchurian Candidate,” and Elvis Presley’s 1965 musical romantic comedy film “Girl Happy.” Her small credited supporting roles include in 1964’s Island of the Blue Dolphins and 1967’s Don’t Make Waves. In 1965, she appeared in western drama television series “The Big Valley,” aired on ABC. In 1967, she portrayed the role of Helen in American comedy film “Don’t Make Waves,” directed by Alexander Mackendrick. She was mainly featured amidst the supporting cast. Julie Payne lived for seventy eight year and died on June 7, 2019 due chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
