Dixie Virginia Carter, one of the daughters of Esther Virginia and Halbert Leroy Carter, was born on 25th May,/1939 in Mc Lemoresville, Tennessee. Dixie spent her most teenage days in Memphis. She did her undergraduate from the University of Memphis. While being in college, Dixie was a member of Tri Delta sorority. Dixie’s charm got her a place in the Miss Tennessee pageant as the first runner-up. In the same year, she won the title of Miss Volunteer beauty pageant. On hearing a broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera at the age of 4, Dixie made up her mind to become an opera singer.
Her professional career started with her role as ‘Julie Jordan’ in a production “Carousel” in Memphis. Later, she married a professional businessman and a banker, Arthur Carter. She took a long break of 8 years to raise her two daughters Ginna Carter and Mary Dixie Carter, who are now working as actress and screenwriter, respectively. After her divorce from Arthur Carter, Dixie met a Broadway actor, George Hearn. After a few years of marriage, Dixie finally met Hal Holbrook and they stayed together till Dixie’s last days.
Dixie Carter is known for her exceptional work in “Designing Women” as ‘Julia Sugarbaker’ (1986-1993), “On Our Own” (1977-1978), “Filthy Rich”(1982-1983), “Different Strokes” (1984-1985). In the year 2007, Carter won her one and only nomination for the Emmies, for her extraordinarily brilliant performance on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” as Marcia Cross’s frightening mother-in-law. After being a successful actress for all these years, Dixie took her last few breaths on 10th April,/ 2010. As informed by her husband Hal, Carter died due to endometrial cancer.
