American film and television director Karyn Kiyoko Kusama born on March 21, 1968, at St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her graduation from Ladue Horton Watkins High School in St. Louis. She also went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. During her college days, she won first prize in her career for film Sleeping Beauties.
She worked as nanny, film editor and in painting houses. As said, everything happens for a reason; she got the chance to work as an assistant with John Sayles through her nanny job. During those days she also started writing screenplays for sayles. Karyn found interest in boxing and learned boxing tactics at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn. After so many struggles, she entered in film direction in 2000, with film Girlfight. She made everyone goes aww with her writing skills and direction.
Girlfight got nominated at Independent Spirit Award for Best feature film, also won Award of youth at Cannes film festival. She directed the second film of her career in 2005, called “Æon Flux”. Kusuma also directed famous TV shows. After setting name in Hollywood, she got married to Phill Hay (writer) in 2006.
They are the parents of one child. Recently, she directed the crime thriller Destroyer (2018).
