Christopher Sacca is a well-rounded professional and a man of many talents. He is a venture capitalist, business advisor, entrepreneur, and attorney. Chris Sacca was born on 12 May in the year 1975, in Lockport, a suburb of Buffalo. He was raised by his parents - his father was a lawyer while his mother used to teach at SUNY Buffalo State. Chris has a mixed ethnic background with Irish and Italian roots, with family originating from Calabria, Italy. Chris attended Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service where he studied abroad in several countries including Ecuador, Ireland, and Spain. He graduated with a Bachelor degree of Science in Foreign Service in 1997 and also received a Juris Doctor in law and technology from Georgetown in 2000. Chris was a member of The Tax Lawyer law review and received numerous awards and honors during his time at Georgetown.
During his time in law school, Chris used his student loans to start a business. However, when the venture failed, he decided to invest the remaining funds in the stock market. By taking advantage of a flaw in the software of online trading brokers in 1998, Chris was able to grow his initial investment of $10,000-$20,000 into $12 million by the year 2000. Unfortunately, when the market crashed, Chris found himself in debt with a negative balance of $4 million. He managed to negotiate the debt down to $2.125 million and had repaid it by 2005. In 2000, Chris started his professional career as an associate at Fenwick & West, a Silicon Valley law firm, where he worked on venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, and licensing transactions for tech clients including Macromedia, VeriSign, and Kleiner Perkins. Unfortunately, he was laid off in 2001 after around 13 months on the job. To survive in Silicon Valley, Chris freelanced as a contract drafter and voice-over artist.
He also started a consulting firm called The Salinger Group to network and eventually landed at Speedera Networks in May 2002. He joined Google in November 2003 as Corporate Counsel. As a member of the legal and business development team, Sacca was tasked with finding large amounts of data space globally. He later became Head of Special Initiatives and led projects such as Google's spectrum initiatives, data center in Oregon, and free citywide WiFi network in Mountain View. He also took part in many of Google's business development transactions and was among the first employees to receive the Founders’ Award, the company's highest honor. While working at Google, Sacca began investing in companies as an angel investor and served as a professional advisor. His first angel investment was in Photobucket, which was later sold to News Corp in 2007.
He also invested in Twitter. After fully vesting at Google, He left the company in December 2007 and started Lowercase Capital in 2010. Lowercase Capital is an investment fund with investments in companies such as Uber, Docker, Instagram, and Twitter. He had acquired a 4% stake in Uber by March 2015, and by then, Forbes estimated his net worth to be $1.2 billion. Lowercase Capital had around 80 startups in its investment portfolio by 2017, including Medium and Uber. He fully divested from Twitter by 2017 and announced his retirement from venture investing that year. . He launched Lowercarbon Capital in 2020, a climate change-related fund, that he and his wife initially funded.
The firm raised $800 million in its first outside funding round in 2021 and has invested in around 50 companies, many of which are startups focused on reducing carbon dioxide. He is regularly featured in the media as a venture capital expert and has appeared on numerous TV shows, including Shark Tank and Billions, and has written a chapter in Tim Ferriss' book - Tools of Titans. On a personal note, he is married to Crystal English Sacca, who is also a partner at Lowercase and a former advertising creative. The couple lives in Jackson, Wyoming, and Big Sky, Montana with their three children. He is also involved in several philanthropic causes and supports The Tony Hawk Foundation. He was also involved in Barack Obama's presidential campaigns as a telecommunications, media, and technology advisor. He is also politically active and was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
