Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay was born in Labhpur, Birbhum, in the Bengal Presidency of British India on August 23, 1898. His father was Haridas Bandyopadhyay, and his mother was Sarasibala Devi. Brought up in a Bengali aspirational family, Tarasankar received early education at his birthplace before attending the very prestigious Vidyasagar College in Kolkata. Bandyopadhyay was a major Indian novelist and short story author, more famous for contributing to Bengali literature. His works have been highly acclaimed for the vibrant expression of the panoramic beauty of rural Bengal and the ordinary people living here. He wrote many novels, short stories, and essays representing the socio-economic conditions that prevailed at that time. His first published work, "Chaitali Ghurni," received much attention and instantly established him as a promising writer.
One of his most famous works is the novel "Ganadebata," which gives a vivid description of the sufferings prevailing in the rural parts of Bengal. It is one of the classics of Bengali literature and has been translated into many languages. Another prominent work is "Hansuli Banker Upakatha," which conveys the Santhal revolt and how the British colonial regime impacted the born individuals of Bengal. These great contributions to literature were rightfully rewarded and received many prestigious awards. In 1966, he was awarded the Jnanpith Award for outstanding contribution to Bengali literature, the highest Indian literary award. He has also been a winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Rabindra Puraskar.
