Ramananda Sengupta is India’s most renowned Cinematographer. He was born on 8th May 1916 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and has worked as a cinematographer in about 70 films. Sengupta received his education at Santiniketan. In 1938 he became a member of the Film Corporation of India in Kolkata. Ramananda worked at the Aurora Film Corporation in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta) as an apprentice. He worked under the guidance of GK Mehta as an assistant in 1941 for the film Kurukshetra. He debuted as a Cinematographer in Purbaraag in 1946. When the French Director Jean Renoir visited Kolkata to shoot the movie, The River (Le Fleuve) in 1951, Ramananda Sengupta joined the crew as a clapper boy. Siddhartha Maity wrote a book and made a documentary about Sengupta titled Alor Frame E Chhavar Saaj (Framing light against the shadows). He died at the age of 101 on 17th September 2017 in Kolkata, West Bengal.
