Sharmili Ahmed started acting on stage at four. She began her career as a radio announcer & drama artiste in Rajshahi Radio in 1962. In 1964, she marked her debut as a film actress and as a television actress in 1968. She worked in the first-ever television drama serial “Dompoti” on Bangladesh Television. Sharmili Ahmed also worked in several television drama serials such as Brishir Porey (2005), Aguntuk (2005), Chena Manusher Panchalee (2007), Uposhonghar (2010), Poush Phaguner Pala (2011), Abar Hawa Bodoi (2014), and many more. She also hosted a television program “Amar Ma Amar Prithibi” based on World Mother’s Day, aired on Ekushey Television. Throughout her career spanning over fifty years, she acted in around four hundred films and one-fifty television programs.
Also, she was awarded with numerous prestigious awards, including the Ritwik Ghatak Golden Award, Alokito Nari Award, Anannya Award, Syed Mahidul Islam Memorial Award, and others. In 1985, she was honored with the Bachsas Award for her role in Dohon film. Sharmili Ahmed passed away on July 8, 2022, at the age of seventy-five in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She had been suffering from cancer for a long time and died while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
