Nihar Ranjan Gupta, also known by the pen name Banbhatta, was a renowned Bengali novelist and dermatologist. He was born on 6th June 1911 in Narail, British India. He was born in a Kabiraj family to parents Satya Ranjan Gupta and Labangalata Devi. His family migrated to Calcutta after the partition in 1947. He had an elder sister who succumbed to a scorpion sting. Grieved by his sister’s death, Nihar decided to pursue medical science to serve the sick. He studied at Carmichael Medical College. He also served in the Second World War as an army doctor. After the war, he moved to United Kingdom to specialize in dermatology.

He had a passion for literature since childhood. When he was a child, she went to Shantiniketan to meet Rabindra Nath Tagore. His stay in United Kingdom was the time when his love for literature deepened. He also developed deep interest in detective novels. Kalo Bhramar, which means The Black Hornet, was the first detective novel written by Gupta. This novel introduced Gupta’s famously known detective character Kirti Roy. His literary work amount to more than two hundred. His famous books include Ulka, Badshah, Neeltara, Mayur Mahal, etc. Many of his stories are made into Bengali and Hindi films. Gupta breathed his last on 20th February 1986 in Calcutta.
