"Sometimes the best things in life are hidden gems." It is valid for movies, also. Not every time a movie is appreciated, nor it gets the acclaim it deserves. Many times great movies are often left unknown or lesser known. High-budget blockbusters or overhyped films often overshadow some thought-provoking, unique movies. It is often many times that many great movies do not get the praise they deserve. So today, here we are to bring out those underrated gems to the limelight.

1. Nenokkadine

The first movie that comes to my mind when I talk about underrated Telugu movies. Sukumar directed the 2014 Action thriller starring Mahesh Babu. The film follows the story of a rockstar named Gautham, who suffers from a psychological disorder due to a traumatic incident from his childhood. He begins questioning his sanity and reality when he starts seeing strange things around him. The film, though it was known to everyone, it is a massive disaster in Mahesh Babu's career just because the audience couldn't grasp the brilliant concept the movie has and remained an underrated gem in Tollywood.

2. Yevade Subramaniam

"Yevade Subramanyam" is a 2015 coming-of-age drama directed by Nag Ashwin. The movie follows the journey of Subramanyam, a corporate employee frustrated with his job and life. He meets a free-spirited girl named Anandi and joins her on a road trip to explore the world and find his true purpose in life. The film received critical acclaim for its fresh take on the coming-of-age genre and Nani's exceptional performance as the lead character. Despite the positive reviews, the movie did not perform well at the box office and remains an underrated gem in Tollywood.

3. Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju

The 2015 romantic drama by Kranthi Madhav starred Sharwanand and Nithya Menen in the lead roles. The film tells the story of two individuals who fall in love with each other but get separated due to some reason. They meet again to know that they are waiting for each other. Despite its solid performances and well-crafted story, "Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju" did not receive the commercial success or critical acclaim it deserved. It is considered an underrated gem in Tollywood.

4. Saahasam

Saahasam is a 2016 adventure action thriller starring Gopi Chand in the lead role. Saahasam is a treasure hunt movie with an adventurous trip to Pakistan to find treasure. The film has a terrific screenplay with amazing visuals. Despite its entertaining storyline and well-executed action sequences, "Saahasam" went largely unnoticed by the audience and critics alike. However, for those who enjoy action-comedy films with a touch of romance, "Saahasam" is worth a watch.

5. Kshanam

Kshanam is one of the most underrated movies in Tollywood. The movie went relatively unnoticed during its initial release but later got recognized for its gripping storyline and powerful performances. The film follows the story of Rishi, who returns to India from the USA to help his ex-girlfriend, who is searching for her missing daughter. As they dig deeper into the case, they discover shocking truths about the girl's life and the people around her, ultimately leading to a thrilling and unexpected climax.


6. Swamy Ra Ra

"Swamy Ra Ra" is a 2013 Telugu crime-comedy film directed by Sudheer Varma. The movie revolves around a stolen Ganesh idol, which brings together a con artist, a bank employee, and a cop who are all after it for different reasons. The film received critical acclaim for its unique storyline. Still, it did not fare well at the box office and was considered an underrated gem of Telugu cinema. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good crime caper with a healthy dose of humor and action.

7. Leader

"Leader" is a Telugu political drama film released in 2010 and directed by Sekhar Kammula. The movie revolves around the story of a young man named Arjun, who aspires to become a politician to bring about a positive change in society. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the movie was considered an underrated gem in Telugu cinema.

8. Ghazi

"Ghazi" is a 2017 Indian Telugu-language war film directed by Sankalp Reddy, based on the mysterious sinking of PNS Ghazi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Despite being a critically acclaimed film, "Ghazi" did not receive the commercial success it deserved. However, the film's gripping story, intense performances, and stunning visuals have made it an underrated gem of Telugu cinema.

9. Kanche

The 2015 Telugu war drama film by Krish as director, starring Varun Tej and Pragya Jaiswal in lead roles. The film has World War II as the backdrop. The film showcases the caste system prevalent in Indian society during the pre-independence era and how it affects people's lives. The National award-winning film was well acclaimed by critics but not well received by the audience as it did not fare well at the box office.

10. Vedam

Vedam is a 2010 film directed by Krish. It stars an ensemble cast including Allu Arjun, Manoj Manchu, Anushka Shetty, and Manoj Bajpayee. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the film was not a commercial success at the box office and is often considered an underrated gem of Telugu cinema. It is a story of 5 parallel stories that all connect at the end. Vedam is a masterclass in storytelling and filmmaking. Despite being underrated, the film has gained a cult following and is widely known as one of the best Telugu films ever made.
