Sasural Genda Phool is a famous television light-hearted family drama series aired on Star Plus. It is set in the beautiful and old Delhi 6 area, India and brings to life the characters of Suhana and Ishaan. The story revolves round the love-story of Suhana and Ishaan, how they meet, their marriage, family, etc.

Suhana is a full-spirited girl, belonging to an affluent background, and brought up with all amenities and servants available for her beg and call. Having lost her mother at an early age, she has always been very lonely. She tries everything to get her dad’s attention but he is always busy and hence, Suhana grows up to be a rebellious person. Having been denied love and being called un-fit for marriage by her love crush/boyfriend- Mohit, she decides to prove him wrong and agrees to marry anyone her Dad picks for her.

Ishaan is a shy, warm-hearted software engineer living in old Delhi with his big joint-family. He has always failed in love and is the typical mama’s boy character who intends to marry according to his family’s choice.

How they meet, fall in love and where life takes them, how Suhana having brought up in a small family adjusts to the new big family, etc. forms the crux of Sasural Genda Phool. It has also been known as the journey of Suhana’s character and how she finds the essence of family and its importance. She discovers the love and care of the family and hence the name - Sasural Genda Phool.

The serial explores emotions attached to relationships and family bonds. After Suhana and Ishan got married, they faced many problems adjusting together. Ishan decides to give some time and space to Suhana with the intention that she can adapt to the family. The decision of Ishaan turned good, and Suhana eventually got attached to the family. She creates heartfelt bonds with everyone in the family, especially Shailaija (Ishaan’s Badi Maa). Soon, she starts acknowledging Ishaan’s care and reciprocates the same. Her growing affection and care made the family stronger and happy. The Kashyap, though, appears simple but has many hidden dark secrets. With the episodes passing, viewers watch the family tackling their dark past, such as Ishwar abandoning his wife and child, the unfulfilled dreams of Alok, the dilemma of Radha about accepting her son, and many more. Meanwhile, another shocking news comes to Kashyaps when they get to know about the illness of Suhana. Suhana was diagnosed with third-stage benign brain cancer.

The serial shows how the in-laws support Suhana emotionally and physically and get her treated. Soon, Suhana gets cancer-free, and their lives return to normal. As the story continues, Suhana desires to work in the entertainment industry as she gets an offer to act as the lead role in a television serial. Initially, the family members did not support her wish, but after some intense discussion, they allowed her to work. But this leads to more family issues, and Ishaan gets jealous of Suhana. The fame and success that Suhana got after working in the serial hurt Ishan’s ego. Later, the misunderstandings between Ishan and Suhana got sorted out. The younger sister of Suhana, Sanjana, falls in love with Deepak, the son of Radha.

Suhana’s father did not support this relationship when he got to know that Deepak was born as a result of the molestation of Radha. Things started getting more complicated when Radha also discouraged Deepak. Suhana and Ishaan handled the situation carefully and convinced the father of Suhana. The serial ends with the engagement of Deepak and Sanjana. Recently, in 2022, season 2 of this serial was aired with the same characters and continuation of the family life of Kashyap. The plot of season 2 revolves around getting Ishaan remarried after the death of Suhana.

The show went on to become a great hit. So much that it was remade in Bengali –‘Ogo Badhu Sundari’ and was aired on Star Jalsa.
