Priyadarshan's film 'Virasat' won him the best film (critics) award. Actress Tabu and actor Anil Kapoor won the best critics award for their performances in the film ‘Virasat’. Actor Kamal Haasan won the best story writer award for the film 'Virasat'. It may be noted that this film was the remake of a Tamil Movie ‘Devar Magan’. Jaya Bachchan had a mention of ‘Special Award’ in this Filmfare awards. South Indian composer Karthik Raja won the R.D. Burman Award. J.P.Dutta had won the best director award for blockbuster film ‘Border’. Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra together had won the best film award for film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. Actor Shah Rukh Khan won the best actor; Madhuri Dixit won the best actress, and Karishma Kapoor had won the 'best-supporting-actress' award from Filmfare for their performances in film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. Amrish Puri won the best supporting actor for ‘Virasat’.

Comedian-actor Johnny Lever won the best comedian award for film ’Deewana Mastana’ and actress Kajol won the best villain award for her negative performance in the film 'Gupt'. Akshaye Khanna won the best male debut of the year for film ’Border’ and actress Mahima Chaudhry won the best female debut award for film ‘Pardes’. Uttam Singh won the best music composer award for film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. Best lyricist award was received by Javed Akhtar for the song ‘Sandese Aate Hai’ for film ‘Border’. Singer Alka Yagnik won the best female singer award for song ‘Meri Mehbooba’ for film ‘Pardes’. Singer Abhijeet won the best male playback singer award for song ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaun’ for film ‘Yes Boss’.

Film ‘Gupt’ had won for Viju Shah best background score award and for Rajiv Rai best editing award. Sharmishta Roy had won the best art direction award for film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. Aditya Chopra had won the best dialogue writer award for film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ and Subhash Ghai had won the best screenplay award for film ‘Pardes’. The best choreographer award went to Farah Khan for song ‘'Dhol Bajne Laga'’ for film ‘Virasat’. Ravi K. Chandran had won the best cinematographer award for film ‘Virasat’. Most of the films that swept awards in this Filmfare awards was blockbuster hit of the year.
