The 6th Filmfare Awards happened on May 10, 1959 in Bombay, India to recognize the notable Hindi films in year 1958. The film, Madhumati won many awards including the Best Film Award while the director of the film, Bimal Roy received another Filmfare award for Best Director. The comedian, Johnny Walker won the Best Supporting Award after donning the role of Charandas in Madhumati. Music composer Salil Choudhury got the Best Music Director and respected singer, Lata Mangeshkar is the first to win the Best Female Playback Singer Award for the song, Aaja Re Pardesi. Urdu writer, Rajinder Singh Bedi is also the first winner of the Best Dialogue Award. Film and art director, Sudhendu Roy won the Best Art Direction and cinematographer, Dilip Gupta won the Best Cinematography Award for the black and white category of the same film. Also from the Madhumati film, film director, Hrishikesh Mukherjee won the Best Editor Award.

The veteran actor, producer and director, Dev Anand won his very first Best Actor accolade for the film, Kala Pani which he also produced under his own production house, Navketan Films. Bollywood actress, Nalini Jaywant received the Best Supporting Actress Award for the same film. Bharathanatyam dancer and popular actress, Vyjayanthimala finally accepted her Best Actress trophy after doing the roles of Champabai and Rajani in the 1958 Hindi film, Sadhna. Lyricist, Shailendra won the Best Lyricist Award for penning the song, Yeh Mera Diwanapan Hai in Dilip Kumar’s starrer film, Yahudi.

The Best Story Award goes to Mukhram Sharma for the film, Sadhna and the Best Sound Design goes to Ishan Ghosh for the film, Chandan.
