There’s an old saying, ‘Never take your audience for the granted’.
The issue between the producers and the exhibitors has reached Bollywood as well. However, the fight is not for the larger share of theatrical rights, or the priority for OTT. The case is the reluctance of the production houses to release big ticket movies in May!
Thanks to both the commercial failures, and the current Lok Sabha elections, there will be no major release in the month of May. Neither Akshay Kumar nor Ajay Devgn managed to attract the crowds to the theaters with their respective releases.
The exhibitors though aren’t impressed. They feel that the producers are taking them for granted by supplying ‘mediocre products’, while the theatre owners and exhibitors have to suffer for no fault of theirs. One of the observers revealed that elections may influence the release somehow, but are not the only reason for this loss. According to the observer, in 2019, it was during the elections that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ had released, and yet the movie turned out to be a massive blockbuster. Even films like ‘De De Pyaar De’ opened well. Akshaye Rathi, who is a noted film analyst, accused Bollywood producers of deliberately the golden opportunity of capitalizing on the summer vacations that usually come up with May.
