Plot

After Arunmozhi Varman and Vandhiya Devan drowned in the sea, the Chozha empire got the news that they were drowned dead. Little do they know that Oomai Rani, aka Mandakini, saved the two. Assuming that it was Nandini’s plan to assassinate Arunmozhi, Aaditha Karikalan decides to take revenge on his ex-lady love Nandini and gathers the armed forces. Meanwhile, Madhurandagan wants to crown himself as the King and starts activating his evil plans. Like Aaditha Karikalan, Nandini plans to finish off his story. Who wins in the end? Will Arunmozhi and Vandhiyadevan save Aadithan? The rest of the film is interestingly made.

Star Performance

Aishwarya Rai is top-notch in both roles. She steals the heart of the audience with her excellent performances. Her eyes speak more than words. Vikram has also got a solid role in this part, and he has done a fantastic job. Ravi and Karthi are good in the given roles. Trisha is quite decent in the given role.

Analysis

The first part created a huge expectation for the second part, and Mani Ratnam, the maker, has planned it well and given a decent entertainer to Ponniyin Selvan’s special audience. Though it appeared that Karthi, Ravi, and Trisha would steal the show in the second part, it is Aishwarya Rai and Vikram, the original show stealers. Mani Ratnam’s choice of artists is superb, and the centum goes to Ash. Hats off to the co-writers Elango Kumaravel and Jayamohan for their crispy writing. The music by Rahman and the cinematography by Ravi Varman are top-notch. The editing by Sreekar Prasad is good too. The costumes and the production designs are excellent, as in the first part.

What’s There?

  • Mani Ratnam’s hard work is visually seen
  • The performances of Ash and Chiyaan excel
  • The BGM by ARR is good

What’s Not There?

  • A few cinematic scenes
  • The first half is a bit slow

Verdict

Ponniyin Selvan is definitely a pride of Tamil cinema in the making aspects. The performances of the stars and Mani Ratnam’s direction hold the thrill of the movie-watching. If you are the fan of Mani Ratnam and the Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan, PS II is worth watching!
