Plot
Kalai is a diligent student of the martial art form, vovinam, under the tutelage of a resolute martial arts instructor. Malar comes to visit her friend in the same school but ends up falling in love with Kalai. Their alliance is, however, not accepted by her mother. At the same time, Malar is abducted by unknown assailants. Now it is up to Kalai to bring back Malar safe and sound.
Star Performances
For all the flaws of this film, lead actor Ajay is probably one of the few reasons why you might test your patience with this film.
Kalabhavan Mani as the chief antagonist also attempts a nice act, combining his negative psyche with some dark humor. However, beyond a level, his act just doesn’t seem good enough.
Analysis
A film about a Vietnamese martial art? Not bad for a start. However, writer cum director RK Parasuram had probably other ideas, and he ended up making ‘Kalaivendhan.’
This is the story of a martial arts student, who attracts the attention of a young visitor, and how a lover’s obsession wreaks havoc on the young couple. Wait a minute, isn’t this familiar?
Looks like the makers decided to make their version of ‘Varsham’ [based on an identical theme]. Now that wouldn’t have been a bad idea had they kept one small thing in mind: some common sense!
For all its bravado, the story lacks coherence. Except for the lead, and to some extent his mentor, played by Thalaivasal Vijay, none of the characters seemed genuinely interested in the project. Even the host of character actors like Manobala, TP Gajendran, Anu Mohan, etc. cannot make up for the half-hearted efforts of the writer cum director RK Parasuram.
Kalabhavan Mani as the obsessive lover attempts a unique act as a villain with some humor. However, beyond a level, even he falls flat. The visuals might be appealing, and the action choreography is decent, but the film falters when it needs to deliver the most: a decent storyline

Verdict
‘Kalaivendhan’ is a movie that could’ve been so much about martial arts. However, writer cum director RK Parasuram’s attempt turned out to be less than satisfactory. Only actor Ajay and Thalaivasal Vijay’s efforts made it somehow passable.
