This movie was inspired by a novel of the same name, that was written by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. This is a movie based on the concept of ceasing the rise of an evil spirit using magic spells. Precisely, it is a good versus evil game. This movie is directed by Jon Turteltaub.
PLOT: One of James A. Stephens's apprentices, Alfred Molina, betray his master and joins with Alice Krige's evil force. The ring gets a life and wraps around Cherry's finger. Cherry accidentally opens the grim hold. Will he be able to recover Monica and kill Kringe?
ANALYSIS: Turteltaub makes use of special set-pieces, with special effects added to it. The narration was not bad. Cage explains in detail about the back story; that bores the audience a bit. But the conversations between Cage and Baruchel is jocular. Many screenplay writers were involved in the movie. This fact worried many movie enthusiasts. Luckily, we got a humorous movie on the screen. The reference made to Star Wars is very funny.
STAR PERFORMANCES: The youth protagonist role is played by Jay Baruchel, who is amiable and charming. Molina is tremendous as his character. Cage was a bit cheerless. Though he has the capability of giving a performance to his fullest, he constrained himself. Monica and Kringe are underused. Toby Kebbell does a funny supporting role.
WHAT'S THERE? The special effects are an eye candy. The chase among the shape-changing cars and Cage flying on a stone eagle were impressive.
WHAT'S NOT THERE? The movie loses its track in the middle when it faces the dilemma of choosing either the serious wizard path or the silly comical path. This movie hit only the young demographic much.
VERDICT: An action packed movie that has some good spells. However, the emotional spell is missing.
