Analysis
The film starts inside a classroom where Alex, the user, receives a text from his crush and contemplates what to respond to her with. The phone then zooms in and showcases the beautiful and full-of-life digital city inside the phone, Textopolis, where all the emojis live.
Alex, on his friend’s advice, decides to send an emoji to his crush. This message is messed up by Gene as he panics when being selected, to which he is called in by Smiler (a smiling emoji), who concludes that he is a malfunction.
Gene then escapes the bot chase and ultimately meets one old emoji who was once popular, Hi-5, as they both seek out to find a hacker to solve the problem they are in.
Towards the end, Alex decides to get his phone factory reset to fix it, but that’d mean distraction from Gene’s world, to which Gene expresses himself as various emojis, and that text is sent to Alex’s crush, which leads to Alex cancelling the reset and Gene saving the day.
Ultimately, Gene accepts himself for who he is and lives his life in Textopolis.
