Plot
The film is based on Bryan Stevenson’s 2014 memoir of the same name and follows him on his journey as a lawyer to help poor people on death row in Southern American states. The film follows Bryan Stevenson, played by Michael B. Jordan in 1989 as he moves to Alabama and works with Eva Ansley, played by Brie Larson, to work on his equal justice initiative. On a visit to a prison to meet death row inmates who are seeking appeals of their convictions, he met Walter McMillian, played by Jamie Foxx, a man convicted in 1986 for the murder of a 18 year old girl. When Stevenson peruses the evidence related to McMillian’s case he finds that the case is based entirely on the testimony of a convicted felon whose sentence was reduced in return for his testimony. The film follows Stevenson on his arduous journey to secure justice for McMillian.
Star Performance
Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx deliver spectacular performances. Michael B. Jordan perfectly captures Bryan Stevenson’s passion, his sense of justice, and eloquent speech. Jamie Foxx and Rob Morgan give excellent, heartbreaking performances as death row inmates.
Analysis
“Just Mercy” aptly captures the flailing legal structure at a time when racial discrimination was a common act. The film also incorporates the plight of death row inmates and those who are wrongly convicted.
