The film’s producers are Lorenzo Di, Bonaventura, Erik Howsam, Joey Tufaro, Gregory Chou, Halle Berry, and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas. Flavio Labiano is the cinematographer of the film. Avi Youabian is the editor of the movie.

Plot

The story witnesses a mishappening in the life of Karla Dyson, a waitress and single mother. One day, she takes her six-year-old son, Frankie, to a carnival. Her son means the world to her and she is fighting a court battle for his custody. At the fair, she receives a call and leaves her son for a minute or two and when she returns, her son is missing. When searching for him, Karla finds that a woman is forcing Frankie into a green Mustang with a man sitting in the driving seat.

Meanwhile, she also lost her phone. She started chasing the car in her red minivan. Who abducted Frankie, and why? Will Karla be able to rescue her? The rest of the story answers the same.

Star Performances

Halle Berry, an Academy awardee, stands out and carries the whole movie. She portrays Karla, a strong and independent mother who can go to any terms when it comes to the safety of her child. Halle did an excellent job, and we can feel her emotions and rage as the story proceeds. However, the poorly written one-dimensional character provided no scope for improvisation. Also, the kidnappers played the cliché villains, and their performance is nothing different from what we have already seen. The rest of the cast did what they could with their limited screen time. Their underdeveloped roles don’t leave any impact on the overall story.

Analysis

Screenwriter Knate Lee writes a straightforward screenplay without any much of sidetracking that follows a mother’s pursuit to rescue her child from danger. The story constantly moves forward without giving much space for character development or for the audience to attach to the characters. Except for Karla, none of the other characters, including the kidnappers and her son Frankie, was given enough importance. The dialogues in the film lack depth and are just for the sake of proceeding of the story further. The packed screenplay of 95 minutes is filled with action sequences and some illogical sequences that hardly make any difference. Also, some of the scenes feel rushed, which could have been avoided. At every step, Karla pushes her limits as a mother and as a human, and rather than relying on law enforcement agencies, she tries to do everything by herself. The super maternal instinct is highlighted throughout the film. While doing so, she even broke many rules and caused havoc, but surprisingly none of the traffic officer was involved for a long time. However, in the scenes where we are shown the rage and emotions of Karla, Halle Berry outshines herself and makes us forget about the absurdness of the story. On the technical front, the cinematography works for the film however, one feels a slight headache because of the sudden close ups and cut camera work during the case sequences. The music and background are decent. There is scope for betterment in editing. The CGI and VFX are not up to the mark.

What’s There?

  • Halle Berry’s performance is the sole praise-worthy thing in the film.
  • The cinematography works in creating a claustrophobic environment.

What’s Not There?

  • The story becomes more predictable as it moves forward, making it less engaging for the viewers.
  • The story is filled with plot holes and illogical sequences.
  • The lack of character development is a central drawback of the film.
  • There are some unbelievable and absurd sequences.

Verdict

Kidnap is neither a masterpiece nor a bad film. It is a movie which is watched just for the sake of entertainment and the adrenaline rush. The story is full of loopholes and not-so-logical thing, but anyhow the film creates a sense of tension around the main plot.
