The Free State of Jones is a movie based on the theme of war and life of Newton Knight, a survivor from the Battle of Corinth. The film was inspired by his armed forces alongside the alliance in Jones County during the American Civil War.
Plot As the American civil war divides the country into two parts, a poor southern farmer, Newton Knight from Mississippi, leads a group of small farmers to fight against the Confederacy in Jones County. After he survived from the Battle of Corinth in 1862, he leads this rebellion. After launching his forces, he defeated the Jones County from the Confederacy and thus created the Free State of Jones. He helped in the reconstruction and development of the place. Knight on his journey meets an enslaved girl, Rachel and marries her. Thus this is how he establishes a mixed- race community.

. The film tries to reveal the real life incidents happened during the American civil war. It shows the real events happened with Knight and the group which he formed for the rebellion. The filming of the picture is done in places like New Orleans and Lafayette. The cinematography done by Benoit Delhomme and music were given by Nicholas Britell is like an icing on the cake. Thus the hard work done by both the cast and the crew will please the viewers.
Star Performance Matthew McConaughey plays the role of Newton Knight and has played his part very well. His acting is terrific and has a great impact on the audience. Gugu Mbatha- Raw plays the character of Rachel. Her acting adds charm to the movie.
What’s there?
1. It is a great film and reveals various situations of the civil war. It tells such incidents of the war which people might not have read or heard about.
2. It is a thought provoking movie and the events taking place makes the audience connect to the story.
What’s not there?
1. The film deals with the real life incidents of Knight but not in a proper way.
2. At 2.5 hours, the movie is a bit too long and needs editing. Thus the Free State of Jones has got mixed reactions from the critics.
