The movie starts off with Frankie doing a strip dance; she’s known around the town as one of the best at the job. Frankie, after the job, goes into the dressing room and was asked by one of her colleagues whether it has her who finished the crossword, to which she replied a no. From there onwards, Frankie faces various strangers who confront her as being deranged. A doctor named Oswald hears of these incidents and calls on Frankie. From the various sessions with the doctor, Frankie realizes she has been suffering from various voices in her head, particularly Alice, a white racist and Genius, a 7-year-old child. The movie goes on as Frankie finds out what triggered her split-personality and the various incidents from her past that led her to the traumatic life she’s facing as an adult. With the help of Dr. Oz, she struggles to free her mind, body and soul and fights to come out of the disorder.
Analysis: With Halle Berry’s reputation, the film didn’t quite meet its expectations. The actor got a chance to play the hero and the villain from the same body but didn’t exactly live up to her image. Though it was good to watch Halle Berry’s acting as Frankie, it’s an eyesore to see her acting as the other two personalities. The movie, though based on a real story, has an inclination towards making it a fantasy, which leaves an awkward impression on the viewers. Even though the movie could be expanded to cover a lot on the subject of multiple personality disorders, it just sticks to a simple search for a psychic disturbance.
What’s there? 1. An insight to the world of the 70’s racism 2. A touch to the depths of a little-known disease 3. Good imagination and little boredom
What’s not there? 1. Halle Berry’s Oscar performance 2. Prestigious picture meeting its expectations.
Verdict: A good storyline and treats the subject matter with respect. Though there are various parts of the movie, where the story gets interesting, the movie overall doesn’t rise above average.
