Plot
The story of the film revolves around a man named Abe Lucas. Abe, a philosophy professor joins the faculty at a small town New England college. At college, Abe starts experiencing existential crisis, and depression, his life seems meaningless to him. So, he starts drinking excessively. At his college he catches eye of two women: Rita Richards, a chemistry professor in his college, and Jill Pollard, his student.
Rita lives with her husband, but she is not satisfied with her marriage.
Jill lives with her parents and is dating Roy, and they are in a serious relationship.
Abe decides to sleep with Rita and keep a friendly relation with Jill. Abe gets more depressed when he cannot get an erection during his first sex with Rita.
During a lunch, Abe and Jill overhears a conversation, where a woman says she will lose her child in the family court because the judge of the court was unethical.
Abe feels bad for the woman, and then he decides to help that lady secretly by murdering the judge of the family court. Abe thinks that there is no chance of him being caught because he does not know the judge.
Now, Abe has a reason to live, his gets a purpose in his life. Abe starts coming out from his state of depression. He lives a happier life, he is also able to have sex with Rita now.
Abe starts following the judge to know more about him and his habits. After following him for a couple of weeks Abe gets to know that the judge goes for jogging, buys a juice from a juice shop, and sits at a bench for some time to cool down.
From the information he collected, the best way to kill the judge was to poison him. He steals the keys of chemistry lab of the college from Rita, and silently takes Cyanide from there.
The next day he goes and buys juice from the same shop from where the judge buys juice for himself. Abe mixes the Cyanide in the cup of juice and sits with the judge on same bench. He switches the cups while the judge was distracted. And, the judge dies of Cyanide poisoning.
Abe feels good after this, he feels he has done something worthwhile by freeing the world of an evil man.
Soon, his friendship with Jill turns into a romantic one. When, Jill’s boyfriend gets to know about this he feels cheated and breaks up with her.
Jill and Rita, who are quite friendly with each other, begin to suspect Abe’s involvement in Judge’s murder after they start joining clues, such as the missing keys of chemistry Lab, Abe’s presence in the Lab when the keys got missing. But, even after all this, Rita decides to leave her husband and live with Abe.
Jill, who wants to solve the mystery of Abe’s involvement in judge’s murder case, gets into Abe’s residence through a window to get some clues and ends up discovering damning notes. When Jill confronts Abe about this, Abe admits his deed. Jill decides to quit their relationship.
When Jill gets to know that an innocent guy is being accused of the murder, she pressurizes him to go to the police or she will denounce him.
Abe tries to kill Jill by pushing her down an elevator, but he himself trips down to death. Later Jill and Roy, reunites.
Star performance
Joaquin Phoenix, as Abe, the main lead of the film, wins hearts with his wonderful acting performance. His performance was phenomenal. He nailed the character of Abe, a depressed philosophy professor.
Emma Stone as Jill, looked impressive. Her character brings charm in the movie. She looks pretty and youthful as Jill.
Parker Posev as Rita, the chemistry professor looked perfect fit for her character.
All the other characters also did a great job.
Analysis
The director of the film is Woody Allen, who is popularly known for both his unsuccessful and successful films.
“Irrational Man” is a film with a good storyline and narrative.
The only worst part of the movie is the female characters of the film. The film tries to show them as respectful and admirable. But actually, both of them cheat on their partners.
The film is all about how a man, just to come out of his state of depression and live a life that is worth it, kills a judge who has nothing to do with him. The film shows how morality is affected by situations.
The movie has a lot of dialogues and the characters are written beautifully. The film offers rich and fantastic visuals. The music and the BGMs of the movie are also good and worth appreciation. The acting performances of the star cast is phenomenal. The costumes of the actors are good and suit their characters.
