Plot

The animated film’s protagonist is Prince Philippe Charming, voiced by Wilmer Valderrama. An evil fairy had cursed Prince Philippe to steal the heart of every woman who meets eyes with him. The curse would last only till he turns 21, after which, all the love would disappear. The curse can only be broken with a kiss of true love. Shortly before he turns 21, Prince Philippe proposes to three women he met in various situations out of desperation. Prince Philippe is confused as to whom he should get married to because he is engaged to three women – Snow White, voiced by Avril Lavigne, Sleeping Beauty, voiced by G.E.M., and Cinderella, voiced by Ashley Tisdale. Prince Philippe also has feelings for the bandit Lenore, voiced by Demi Lovato. The film follows Prince Philippe’s journey of searching for true love.

Star Performance

Although the film has such a stellar voice cast with rich music backgrounds, it fails to take advantage of their talents. The dialogues are clichéd and cringe, and do not give a chance to the voice actors to showcase their talents.

Analysis

The modern animated take on classic fairytales shows its modernism only in the fact that the heroine is a working class woman but fails in all other aspects because the story is full of clichéd concepts such as damsel in distress, rescuer prince and non-consensual kisses.

What’s There?

  • A stellar voice cast
  • A modern take on classic fairytales

What’s Not There?

  • The film is riddled with clichéd scenes such as non-consensual kisses, damsels in distress, a hero prince who comes to the rescue of the damsel in distress etc
  • Although the film is said to be a modern take, it fails to incorporate liberal concepts to make the fairytales more progressive

Verdict

“Charming” fails to live up to its promise of being a modernized version of classic fairytales. Although it is set in the modern world and it introduces a few changes to the classic version, the larger part of the story remains unchanged and is full of clichéd concepts. The film might be a good watch for animation, fairytale enthusiasts.
