Plot

The film’s protagonist is Papillon, played by Charlie Hunnam, who was a charismatic troublemaker in Paris. He got framed for the murder of a procurer. For his crimes Papillon is sent to a penal establishment in French Guiana. Here he meets a counterfeiter named Dega, played by Rami Malek, who still believes that his wife’s efforts would help get him out of that hellhole. The wealthy prisoners bring money into the criminal establishment by using people as containers. Papillon figures out that Dega is also a part of this arrangement. The establishment is a brutal place, where murders and assault take place regularly. Murderers are hanged in public, and those who try to escape are put in solitary confinement. Papillon and Dega help each other survive in the establishment. Papillon needs the money Dega has for escaping, while the timid Dega needs Papillon’s protection in the harsh atmosphere for survival. The film follows their journey as they survive in the criminal establishment and try to escape from it.

Star Performance

Charlie Hunnam perfectly embodies Papillon, he has also worked hard to build his physicality for this role. Rami Malek performs well but his character feels a bit under-developed and one-dimensional.

Analysis

“Papillon” is a remake of a 1973 film of the same name. The 2017 Papillon does not make any additions or modifications in the 1973 classic. Dega’s character feels under-developed and Rami Malek could have done much better.

What’s There?

  • A stellar star cast
  • A heartbreaking story of surviving human rights violations
  • An inspiring story of not giving up hope even in the dreariest situations

What’s Not There?

  • The film does not justify the need for a remake of the 1973 classic because it does not make any additions or modifications

Verdict

“Papillon” portrays a story of the importance of hope for survival in a brutal environment. Papillon and Dega find support and solace in the other’s company. The film highlights how important Dega’s presence was for Papillon. Charlie Hunnam gives a stellar performance. “Papillon” would be a good watch for drama enthusiasts who haven’t watched the 1973 classic.
