Plot

Riggan Thomson is a well-established actor, famous for his portrayal of the superhero Birdman. However, to his dismay, his role is more famous than his actual flair for acting. Haunted by the visions of his past, Riggan wants to turn over a new life. He decides to relaunch himself as an actor via Broadway. However, the journey is far from a cakewalk. To top it all, Riggan has trouble adjusting to both the new environment, as well as his estranged daughter Sam, who is just out from rehab. Can Riggan achieve what he yearned for?

Star Performances

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu deserves a lion’s share for this unique concept, which now shines as a brilliant movie. He has seen to it that the film is known more for its approach, rather than its mockumentary.

Michael Keaton has given yet another solid performance as Riggan Thomson, who wants to come out from the clout of Birdman. Emma Stone as his estranged daughter is another standout performer.

Analysis

Some films are just not films alone. They are extended platforms for people to show their actual approach to life. Such films are extreme in their views: either you are a die-hard fan or a hardened critic of the same. Nothing in between. ‘Birdman’ is one such film.

As a gentleman once said, ‘A film is more like music than fiction.’ ‘Birdman’ may not be your typical entertainer, but like music, it compels you to feel, as well as think deeply. This is not everybody’s cup of tea, but the makers did not think in this direction either.

In terms of cinematography, ‘Birdman’ has hit a home run. The vision of the director, i.e. to make the film look like a ‘single take,’ has been put to solid use. Even if the plot is not dense, the slick editing and some brilliant acting performances make it an unforgettable experience.

As for the actors, Michael Keaton gives this a personal touch, having played the iconic Batman before. Emma Stone is equally good as Sam. So are Edward Norton, and Zach Galifianakis, who do justice with their respective roles. The pace, as well as the narrative, might not be very tight in the second half, but it does not ruin the overall viewing experience.

What's There?

  • Slick camerawork and editing
  • Brilliant direction by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
  • A memorable performance by Michael Keaton
  • Able support from Emma Stone, Edward Norton, and Zach Galifianakis

What's Not There?

  • Minor glitches in pace and editing

Verdict

‘Birdman’ is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This film must not be missed, come what may. Watch it for Michael Keaton’s brilliant performance if nothing else.
