Plot
Luce is a black high schooler, born and raised in the war-torn country of Eritrea as a child soldier. He was rescued by a white couple, Amy and Peter when he was seven and was brought to Arlington, Virginia, to be raised as an American. After years of therapy and support, he has grown up to be an all-rounder, praised as a model of black excellence by his predominantly white Virginia high school. Luce doesn’t just win trophies, he is a trophy for his school. But one day when Ms. Wilson, Luce’s history teacher, finds a bag full of explosive, illegal fireworks in his locker, allegedly as a result of a disturbing paper Luce wrote, the first seeds of doubt are sowed. She believes that the essay and fireworks are the proof of Luce's sociopathy, which leads her to call Luce's parents. The possibility that Luce is not who he seems to be is questioned, as is our perception of his potential. Is he really just a good guy? Or is he a full-fledged sociopath who knows how to manipulate others and give them what they want while hiding his true nature? The rest of the story deals with that.
Star Performance
Kelvin Harrison Jr. was phenomenal as Luce and brought life to the character. He is well-supported by Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Andrea Bang, Marsha Stephanie Blake, and others. Octavia Spencer gives one of the best performances of her career.
Analysis
The star cast did justice to their roles. The director did an excellent job in giving clear, uncluttered direction. The background score was fantastic and the cinematography was excellent. Luce is an engrossing, compelling, and (at times) intentionally uncomfortable watch because it dares to ask the viewers tough, open-ended questions about identity, race, culture, trauma, skewed perceptions, judgments based on preconceptions, etc. It is a tightly wound thriller with some great performances and ideas, but it lacks those final touches to be the exceptional offering it could've been. This film does not serve you answers on a silver platter. It makes you think and reflect in order to create your own answers. You will need to watch it several times to really appreciate the film. The film is smart enough to make us think and responsible enough not to leave us with cliches and falsely easy solutions.

Verdict
Luce is a must watch for people who loves a good thought-provoking film which can also start conversations. This film will make you think and question a lot of your biases and presumptions. Luce may not have all the answers, but it will force many of us to ask more of the right questions.
