Plot
Air is a sci-fi film that shows a miserable post-apocalyptic reality. In the film Air, like most post-apocalyptic films, most of humanity is wiped out because of the reckless use of powerful biochemical weapons. As a result, this has also made the air poisonous. The film focuses on two survivors, Cartwright and Bauer. The setting of the film is in the U.S.A. The government of the U.S. tries to save its surviving scientists by keeping them in cryogenic sleep in underground facilities until the air is no longer toxic. Cartwright, Bauer, and other engineers in other facilities, are assigned the duty of looking after and guarding these facilities. These workers have to wake up, work for two hours after every six months and then go back to sleep after this session is over. They are given oxygen that lasts for two hours to enable them to complete their routine tasks. One day, when one of their two-hour sessions almost ends, an unfortunate incident obliterates Cartwright’s pod. So they look for an emergency air supply and find a spare sleeping pod. Bauer chooses to use the pod. While inside it, it starts malfunctioning, and he almost dies until Cartwright saves him. Bauer then suggests removing one of the sleepers so Cartwright can occupy it, but Cartwright refuses to do that at the expense of the sleepers’ lives. Cartwright then wears a hazmat suit to explore the nearby facilities and find a solution. As he enters the nearest facility, he discovers that all the people there are already dead. Back at their facility, Bauer is checking the security footage and discovers that when Bauer nearly suffocated, Cartwright was standing right next to him, almost letting him die. This disturbs him. When Cartwright enters his facility, he confronts him about the footage while holding a gun. He chases Bauer through the facility and Cartwright eventually manages to sneak up on Bauer and injects him with a dose of morphine. Bauer makes peace with Cartwright, accepts his fate, and passes out. All the sleepers in the facilities are awakened years later when the air is finally clean.
Star Performance
Norman Reedus put up a convincing act. Djimon Hounsou’s performance was flawless.
Analysis
The plot is simple and predictable, with very few twists. The cast acted well but the script was poor. Initially the film was intriguing, but gradually seemed to slow down and the plot seemed to drag on. The film had a mediocre visual appeal. The background score was excellent. The two workers in the facility did not have a rapport and their dialogues felt forced. The facilities look too drab and futuristic, despite one of the characters walking around with an iPad in the film. By drab, I mean that the equipments look like they were taken from a random junkyard and this makes the film feel low budget.Â
What’s There?
• Suitable background music chosen.
• The actors acted fairly well.
What’s Not There?
• There doesn’t seem to be any rapport or connection between the two engineers.
• The plot is too familiar and boring
• The equipment looks cheap and un-futuristic.
Verdict
The film is alright and even if it gets boring towards the end, people who watch sci-fi or post apocalyptic movie genre will enjoy it.
