The Kollywood Crisis Is Not Over!

Kollywood is back to square one.

When ‘Maharaja’ succeeded against all odds, the Tamil fans that the worst was over and Kollywood would be back to business again. However, little did they realize the damage that S Shankar’s ‘Indian 2’ would do to the box office.

Starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role, the sequel to the 1996 cult classic has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Till now, the movie has collected just 62.15 crore from the domestic collections, with only 43.55 crores from the main Tamil version. Given that the budget is between 200 and 300 crores, this is certainly not good news for either S Shankar or Kamal Haasan.

Indian cinema has been a mixed bag overall. While Malayalam cinema has hit the jackpot, films from Telugu and Hindi domain have been a hit and miss. However, the situation has been for both Kollywood and Sandalwood. Before ‘Aranmanai 4’ became a blockbuster, things were so bad that even the re release of a film like ‘Ghilli’ earned more revenue than the latest Tamil release.
