Although the Tamil region has turned out to be the worst performing unit for Indian cinema the second consecutive time since 2024, Mollywood hasn’t fared any better. According to the recent media reports, the Malayalam industry has suffered several losses despite delivering several hits.
According to the figures compiled by the KFC [Kerala Film Chamber], the Malayalam film industry has suffered an approximate loss of 530 crores this year. While small films continued to rake in big benefits, most of the big bets tanked badly. If not for the overseas revenue, Mohanlal had almost delivered a titanic disaster in the form of L1: Empuraan, which didn’t collect even 110 crores on a budget of 180 crores domestically. Mohanlal’s recent venture, Vrrusshabha, also tanked badly at the box office, despite the film being released in both Malayalam and Telugu.
