She was born on 27 August 1963 in the city of Chennai. Her family was native Telugu and settled in Chennai. She won the Andhra Pradesh beauty contest in 1979, which paved a path for her entry into films. She started acting at an age of fifteen. Her debut film was instead a Tamil movie ‘Thisai Maariya Paravaigal’, for which she was confessed Best New Face Award.

Suma Latha choose a different path after retirement from career, while many stars are seeking new innings on small screen, she kept away from that path and she even refused to act as a judge.
Later she came up with a new idea and started hosting a show on ZEE Telugu a famous channel in A.P named “Bathuku Jataka Bandi”. Bathuku Jataka Bandi( an idea from Tamil talk show), the show  will have a team of  few members including a psychiatrist and legal counsellor. Every week people with certain socio-family problems attend the show for justice and judgement. The team is used to counsel people on their problems and suggests solutions for them. Through its cast on TV, many people having same problem gets direct advice and message to solve it for themselves.

She won Kerala Film Critics Award for the films “New Delhi,” “Thoovanathumbikal,” and “Isabella” under the category of Best Actress.
