She was born on 27 August 1963 in the city of Chennai. Her family was native Telugu and settled in Chennai. She won the Andhra Pradesh beauty contest in 1979, which paved a path for her entry into films. She started acting at an age of fifteen. Her debut film was instead a Tamil movie ‘Thisai Maariya Paravaigal’, for which she was confessed Best New Face Award.

She gained much popularity in Malayalam cinema; she married Kannada Actor turned politician 'Ambareesh' on 8 December 1991, couple has a son named Abishek. They both acted as lead roles in some Kannada movies, one of which received national award. She acted in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. She is fluent in six Languages.

She entered Telugu film industry in 1979 through the movie ‘Samajika saval’, her debut in Malayalam was in 1980. She even acted with Super star '' (south Indian super star). Her majority of the films were in Telugu followed by Malayalam, in Telugu she acted most with Mega star '' (greatest Telugu film hero), in Malayalam she is very fondly remembered for her portrayal of clara in classical cult film, ‘Thoovanathumbikal’.

She won many awards in all South Indian languages including AP state best actress award. Even she won some critic awards during her career.

Suma Latha choose a different path after retirement from career, while many stars are seeking new innings on small screen, she kept away from that path and she even refused to act as a judge.

Later she came up with a new idea and started hosting a show on ZEE Telugu a famous channel in A.P named “Bathuku Jataka Bandi”. Bathuku Jataka Bandi( an idea from Tamil talk show), the show will have a team of few members including a psychiatrist and legal counsellor. Every week people with certain socio-family problems attend the show for justice and judgement. The team is used to counsel people on their problems and suggests solutions for them. Through its cast on TV, many people having same problem gets direct advice and message to solve it for themselves.

She did movies with him such as 'Aahuti', 'Sri Manjunatha', 'Kallarali Hoogvagi' and 'Avatara Purusha'. The film, 'Kallarali Hoovagi', received the National Award. The couple has a boy named Abhishek Ambareesh Gowda. During her career, she has acted in approximately 150 movies. She is known for her work in Malayalam film industry.

She started her acting career in 1979 after winning a beauty contest at the age of 15. She debuted with a Tamil movie named 'Thisai Maariya Paravaigal' which garnered her an award under the category of 'Best New Face'. In 1980, she did her first Malayalam movie called 'Moorkhan', opposite Rajkumar in which she played Jayan’s second female interest. In 1979, she did first Telugu movie 'Samajaniki Saval'.

She received many awards during her career. In 1987, she was honoured with Nandi Award and Film Fans Award under the category of Best Actress for her role in the film Shrutilayalu. She won Kerala Film Critics Award for the films “New Delhi,” “Thoovanathumbikal,” and “Isabella” under the category of Best Actress.
