Ramya S Kapadia is a musician cum dancer. She was born in Chennai. Until she was seven, Ramya was brought up in Muscat. She has a younger brother. Ramya’s mother is her first music teacher. She was a singer, writer cum homemaker. In 1986, Ramya’s family moved back to India, and they lived in Chennai, Calcutta, and Mumbai. She went to SIES College. She graduated from DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering in Mumbai. After her biomedical engineering course, she worked for Siemens. Then, she worked for Sandor Medicaid and Shruti Medi-science. Later, she did her Masters in Medical Physics and Neuroscience.
Ramya studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked in the same place. She is settled in Knoxville, Tennessee. Ramya runs Natyarpana School of Dance & Music in Durham. As her family’s residence and her workplace are different, she shuttles between Knoxville and Durham.
In 2010, Ramya was honoured with the Ella Pratt Emerging Artist Award by the Durham Arts Council. In 2016, she was provided with the Choreography Fellowship from the North Carolina Dance Alliance. In 2020, she received an Artist Support Grant from the NC Arts Council. Ramya worked in the Advisory Committee of Dance at the Van Dyke series from 2019 to 2022. Ramya was the Associate Artistic and Outreach Director of Prakriti Dance in Maryland from 2014 to 2021. She also wrote a book, Taikamaa & The Twin Stars, in 2023.
