Ananthakrishnan, also known as Ananthu, was a screenwriter, actor, and director based in Tamil Nadu. He was born in a village called Kandiramanickam near Thirupathur and Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu. His father’s name was Thiruvengadam, who used to work for South Indian Corporation. He studied for a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Then, he started working as a demonstrator in colleges and later worked as a clerk at A. G. S. Office where he got the opportunity to meet the director Balachander. He started working as a dialogue writer for Balachander's plays and also participated in his story discussions.
As a screenwriter, Ananthu became a close associate of director K. Balachander. Later, he began to work with other directors, such as C. Rudraiah, and did two films with him. Ananthu also worked as a sub-dialogue writer with Chitralaya Gopu for various films, including Galatta Kalyanam and Anubhavam Pudhumai, directed by C. V. Rajendran. He also tried his luck with acting and played a character in a film called Galatta Kalyanam with Jayalalitha and Sivaji Ganesan. In 1991, he made his directorial debut with the film called Sigaram, starring Anand Babu, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Ramya Krishnan, and Radha.
Ananthu was a close associate of Tamil actor Kamal Haasan and was regarded as his mentor. Ananthu helped Haasan to develop close ties with the director K. Balachander. In the early 1970s, Kamal Haasan was being offered only low-key roles in the Tamil cinema. Later, he took the advice of Ananthu and moved to work in Malayalam films. Haasan therefore, credited Ananthu for reinvigorating his interest in films, and he continued to nurture Kamal Haasan's talent by introducing him to world cinema and by evaluating his on-screen performances. Haasan was also grateful to Ananthu for teaching him screenwriting.
In the 1990s, Haasan and Ananthu worked together on a number of films through various capacities. Ananthu also selected the title of Nammavar, a term which was later adapted by Kamal Haasan in his journey of politics. Moreover, Kamal Haasan also dedicated his Henri Langlois Award to Ananthu in 2016. Kamal Hassan also inaugurated an official portrait of Ananthu in 2019 at his office, as a part of a tribute to celebrate his 60 years in the film industry.
