Tamil Producer S S Vasan

S S Vasan is also known as Subramaniam Srinivasan. He was born on 4th January 1904 in Thiruthuraipoondi, Madras Presidency, British India. Following the death of his father, he was forced to move to Madras. He was a renowned Indian journalist, Writer, Advertiser, Film producer, Director, and Business tycoon. S.S Vasan was the founder of the Tamil-language magazine Ananda Vikatan. Other than that, he also founded a film production company named Gemini Studios, Gemini Film Laboratories, and Gemini Picture Circuit.

Before his graduation, he discontinued his studies to set up an advertising agency and a flourishing mail-order agency. Vasan bought the publication, Ananda Vikatan, in January 1928, which was published by Pudhoor Vaidyanadhaiyar till 1927, Vasan relaunched it with the same name but in a different format from February 1928. S.S Vasan was a member of parliament (Rajya Sabha) from the year 1964 and served his term till his death. He passed away on 26 August in 1969 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India, at the age of 65. In 1940, Vasan purchased the Motion Picture Producers Combine, a film studio, and renamed it to Gemini Studios.

His Studios made several successful Tamil, Hindi and Telugu movies from 1940 to 1969. He was also an accomplished writer and translator and a hugely successful journalist. Vasan marked himself to be the first film and media personality to be invited to be a member of parliament in India's Rajya Sabha where, he advocated the granting of industry status to the film trade, the battle which is still being fought.
