After resuming the designation, he announced his plans to established more than a hundred coaching centers to train students for the various competitive exams and also to modify the state board syllabus so that it could compete with CBSE and ICSE. In his entire political career, Sengottaiyan never got embroiled in any corruption issue and sports a clean reputation.

He was the only person who stood with Paneerselvam when he was having a fight with V. K. Sasikala over the post of chief minister. MG Ramachandran, Tamil Nadu's ex-chief minister, and AIADMK's founder was his idol, and he respected him immensely. In fact, after his death, he stood like a rock behind his daughter Jayalalithaa and also grew to adore her. In fact, after her death, Sengottaiyan was one of the few people to visit her pyre early.

He is the one responsible for planning the entire canvassing whenever Jayalalithaa travels for her election campaigns via helicopters. His supporters lovingly call him Route Sengottayan. Initially, Sengottaiyan had bitter arguments with Sasikala but later buried their hatched and maintained affable relation with each other. In 1996, police arrested for causing a loss of more than twelve corers to the government when he was buying spare pieces for the State Transport Corporation.

In 2012, the men in uniform caught his driver and found him guilty of intimidating someone and trying to enter another's property without their permission. His wife's name is Ishwari. The couple has a son named E.S.Kathir, who is Kathir College of Engineering's chairman. Sengottaiyan's daughter-in-law is the institute's secretary. There were rumors of Sengottaiyan having a relationship with women outside marriage, but no one ever confirmed them.
