Sujatha was an Indian actress. She has given performances in various languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Most of her roles show her as an ideal woman or a working woman who bears the responsibility of her house or as someone who bring the change in the society.
She was born on 10 December 1952 in Galle, Sri Lanka. Her parents were Malayalis. While she was in Sri Lanka, she used to participate in school plays. In 1964, she moved to Kerala with her parents. She was only 15 years old when she was married to Jayakar, and later had two children, Sajith (Son) and Divya (Daughter).
She has a brother named Gopinath. Her first role was in a Malayalam movie named 'Ernakulam Junction'. The role garnered the attention of director Balachander. He gave her a part in his Tamil movie name “Aval Oru Thodarkadhai” and introduced her to Tamil Cinema.
She grabbed the attention of others in the industry with her acting in a male-centric industry in that time. She debuted in Malayalam Cinema with the movie “Tapasvini.” During her career, she has performed in about 300 films and most of them are Tamil. Some of the pictures in which she portrayed a senior actor role are 'Kodi Parakkuthu', 'Baba' and 'Uzhaippali'. In the film 'Baba', she played the mother of Superstar Rajinikanth. She received the Filmfare Award for best Telugu Actress for her performance in 'Guppedu Manasu' (1979). She won Tamil Nadu state Film Award for Thunaivi (1981) and 'Paritchaikku Neramaachu' (1982) under the category of Special Best Actress.
In 1998, she garnered Nandi Award for “Pelli” under the category of Best Supporting Actress. She was honoured by the government of Tamil Nadu with 'Kalaimamani Award'. With undergoing treatment for her heart ailment, Sujatha died of cardiac arrest on 6 April 2011 in Chennai. She is survived by her two children.
