Once upon a time, the story of a film used to be the most centered part in making the movie. Even the audience used to encourage the films which had a good plotline. Then, there wasn’t much importance for other players in making the cinema. The directors too couldn't get as much importance as the actor in the films got. Way back in the olden days, the movies become famous with the name of the actors. The promotion process used to go in the name of the cast, but not with the credit of the main makers like directors, producers, etc. Though the work is of the directors and the other crew, it might have been a bit discouraging then, and the days went on without much suffering. Those days are like that. But now, the tradition has changed. People and critics start estimating the film from the very base roots like the photographer, cinematographer, etc. After releasing, critics judge the movie based on the crew, starting from the lightmen to the director. So, every aspect of the film needs to be taken care off. The demand for the ones working in making the movies is increasing nowadays. Here comes the role of the costume designer. One of the best among them in the Tamil film industry is Perumal Selvam.

Perumal Selvam and Niranjani Agathiyan, together, received the 2014 Vijay Award. He received that award in the Best Costume Designer category for the work in Kaaviya Thalaivan. Vijay Awards is a platform where people in the film industry get felicitation for their talents. These awards were started in 2006. The famous Tamil TV channel star, ‘Vijay’, take the responsibility of scrutinizing and distributing awards for those who excel in their field and contribute to the Tamil film industry. Perumal Selvam received critical accolades for his contribution in designing the costumes that the actors wore in Kaaviya Thalaivan. They looked as natural as those, which the people in the pre-independence period wore. Kaaviya Thalaivan is a 2014 movie that transformed into a blockbuster in the Tamil film industry. Vasanthabalan directed the flick with great care, taking all the precautions to make the film look like a historical based movie. The actors who took the lead roles include Siddharth, Prithviraj, Nassar, and Anaika Soti, to name a few. A. R. Rahman scored the music. As far as costume designing is concerned, the director and the producer took special care in selecting the art-work. It performed well at the cinema theaters, and received positive critical response.
