Velrajan, also known by the name R. Velraj, was born on 21st October 1969 under the Libra star sign in Thirunagar, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. For schooling, he went to PKN Boys Higher Secondary School, Thirunagar. After completing his schooling, Velraj went to Madurai Sourashtra College, Madurai for completing his graduation.

He had the spark to be a photographer from his childhood, and during college days he got the opportunity to make enough connections, and he started working as an assistant to the cinematographer, Tirru and assisted him in a few of Tamil language movies, and they celebrated "Aalavandhan" together. The film "Aadukalam" of Tamil language, brought fame to his career. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Cinematographer- South in the year 2011 and Vikatan Award for Best Cinematographer as well.
