Ponnamma Babu is a noted character artist known for portraying satire roles. She is a trained Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattam dancer as well. She entered into theater when she was 15 years. After her marriage to noted theater director Babu, she quit acting in her early age. She made her movie debut in 1996 in Padanayakan playing wife to the noted actor Rajan P Dev. Even though it was a small character she got recognized with her unique acting skills. She has done many character roles as mother, sister, sister-in-law, which were all performance oriented. She never looked for the length of the role she had, but how important the role was in the movie. She started dubbing for herself after Ennu Swantham Janakikutty which gave her recognition for her unique voice and her humorous dialogue delivery. She has acted in almost more than 150 movies so far and still doing good character role in movies.
Her television debut was in comedy serials like Cinemala, which addressed the day today issues either political or social in a comic way. Cinemala is a comedy programme broadcasted in Asianet once a week since 1993 completing more than 1000 episodes and considered to be the oldest programme being broadcasted in a channel. She also acted in the comedy serial Sanmanasullavarkku Samadhanam, a serial about hopes, dreams, politics and culture with gentle humor and funny dialogues. It was also a breakthrough for the National Award winner Suraj Venjaramoodu who was also part of it.
She focuses more on acting in movies than serials and expects to get more strong and deep roles in movie in the future. She is settled in Kottayam, with her husband and her three children; two daughters Deepthi Nirmala and Pinky, and a son Mathew Damien. Her daughter Pinky has made her movie debut in the movie Nakshathrangal in 2014 and her movie Mr. Paavanayi 99.99 is expected for release shortly.
