Madhusoodanan Nair

Madhusoodanan Nair was born on 25^th February 1949 in Aruviyodu in Kerala. He is a renowned poet and a movie critic. His parents are Velayudhan Pillai and Gourikutty Amma. Madhusoodanan’s father was a Thottam Pattu reciter. He learned the ritual songs from his dad at an early age. Madhusoodanan did his UG course at Mahatma Gandhi College and a PG from University College Thiruvananthapuram. After completing his post-graduation degree, Madhusoodanan joined Kumkumam as a journalist. He also worked in Veekshanam. Madhusoodhanan had been a program announcer on All India Radio. He had also worked in Kerala Bhasha Institute as a sub-editor. Finally, he moved his career base as a faculty in Malayalam and joined St. Xavier’s College. Later, he became the Head of the Department.

Malathi Devi is his wife and they have three children, 2 daughters, Rashmi and Ramya and a son, Vishnu. Madhusoodanan’s first poetry got released in the 80s and the second is an anthology named Naranathu Bhrantham. The anthology poetry book was published in 1992 and it had seen 40+ editions and become one of the leading poetry books. Madhusoodanan had also worked on non-fiction books, including Science Nikhantu, Eliotum Richardsum and Nadodi Vignanam. Besides this, he has also entered the film industry with his lyrics. He penned the lyrics for the films, Santhanagopalam, Kulam and Ardhanaari. Daivathinte Vikrithikal, Punyam, Punarjani and Veettilekkulla Vazhi are the films that have his poems.

In 1986, he received the Kunju Pillai Award for Poetry. In 1990, he received the K Balakrishnan award. In 1993, he received the annual award for poetry, Naranathu Bhranthan. He has also won the Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram, R. G. Mangalom Award, Souparnikatheeram Prathibhapuraskaram, Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan Award and Janmashtami Puraskaram for his excellence. In 2016, he received the Padmaprabha Literary Award. Achan Piranna Veedu grabbed him the Sahitya Akademi awards.
